Happy Birthday, Maril!

My Dad/Grandpa (in his pink shirt worn special for my little girl) shows off his prized Fonuts bag!

It was my sister’s birthday yesterday.  Since last night was a (pre)school night, my daughter and I opted for a Saturday celebration with the family in LA.  My daughter picked raspberries, strawberries, cherry tomatoes and Mexican sage in our garden and wanted to decorate Aunt Maril’s cupcake when we got to LA.  So, we drove South and fetched my parents. We then headed off to Doughboys‘ new bakery location to buy my sister’s favorite red velvet cupcake.  After that task was complete (and a few too many samples were had), we got back in the car and headed towards M Cafe’ to meet Maril for lunch.

Heading down Crescent Heights and turning onto Third Street, a sign caught my eye and made me practically stop traffic with the screeching halt of my car.  Fonuts.  I had just recently read about them on Daily Candy and let’s face it, we all know what a sucker I am for good food.  I could not resist trying these “faux” donuts—baked, not fried, with limited sugar and seasonal ingredients.  Yes, please.  I pulled the car over and convinced my dad to hop in with me with Mina hung out in the car with Glammy.  My dad and I almost passed out when we saw the Maple and Bacon flavor and added Strawberry, Rosemary and Olive Oil, Chocolate Hazelnut and Banana Chocolate Chip (which was amazingly gluten free and vegan) to our order (restraint was not on the menu). Co-owner/pastry chef Waylynn Lucas helped us and was so sweet.

Open...just what I wanted to see!

I loved how they used an old stove to house the coffee and tea accoutrements at Fonuts.

Dad and I were nibbling on our fonuts before we got back to the crew in the car and I am hooked!  With great restraint we saved a bite of each for my sister , but it was tough. Fonuts is not to be missed on your next trip to LA. Though we had eaten ourselves silly, we still found room for some healthy bites at family favorite M Cafe’ before taking a nice, long walk with Aunt Maril before heading back to Santa Barbara.  I took in the lovely drive along PCH while my little one dozed.  We made it home just in time to have an early dinner (lots of eating on Saturday), a warm bath and lots of cozy pj time with our dogs before hitting the hay.

Some serious snuggle time at the end of a really nice family day

Happy Birthday, Maril! We promise your appropriately named (wink wink wink) Adesso piece is in the mail!!!
